Legislation falls short in SGA House of Representatives for athlete class preregistration

Efforts to pass a new resolution through the House of Representatives on campus fell through for Vice President of Academic Affairs Bethany Kyle and College of Business Administration senator Tye Doty, who were attempting to gain athletes the opportunity to register for classes one week earlier than senior students.

“I believe ultimately it came down to the students that were against it having a different perspective than the way in which we were looking at it,” Kyle said.

This resolution, had it passed, would have given athletes a better chance of registering for courses that complied with the team’s practice schedule.

“Athletes would have had the opportunity to register one week earlier than seniors (at the same time as honors students),” Kyle said. “This would have been helpful for students that work hard to represent Tarleton in athletics in scheduling around practices and games. With our move to Division I coming in the near future, this would be a move in supporting that.”

Though this particular resolution did not pass through the House of Representatives, the SGA senate has made several other strides in legislature for Tarleton. Students can expect to see several new resolutions to pass through for administration consideration.

“It [the resolution] passed through the senate unanimously, but members of the house did not agree, which is not an uncommon occurrence within our student government,” Kyle said. “Though many were against the resolution, I respectfully disagree and still believe in the resolution we presented and that it would be beneficial to students and the university in many ways.”

For more information on upcoming resolutions with in the SGA, students are welcome to attend the next House of Representatives’ meeting Wednesday, April 2, at 5:15 in NURS 107.
