UPDATE: Student killed in alcohol related collision

Michael McLearen, a Tarleton State Unviersity freshman, died Sunday morning in a vehicle collision outside of DeLeon.

The collision occurred around 2:15 a.m. on CR 435 approximately 4 miles out of DeLeon, according to the Stephenville Empire-Tribune.

The collision involved two other teenagers. Zachary Ryon, 17, was driving a 1998 Dodge pickup at a high speed and it lost control. According to the article, the pickup struck an embankment, rolled onto its left side and landed on its top.

McLearen was pronounced dead at the scene. Ryon and the third passenger, Haley Johnson, 18, of DeLeon, were not injured. None of the passengers were wearing a seatbelt.

The accident report states that alcohol was a factor. Ryon was intoxicated and may face charges of intoxicated manslaughter, according to the Empire-Tribune.

McLearen, 19, was studying engineering technology according to university officials.

Funeral services for McLearen will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 29, at the De Leon First Baptist Church.
