On Monday, Feb. 11 10, Amber Nicole Karr, 18, died when the truck she was riding in lost control and struck a pickup pulling a trailer head about two miles south of Stephenville on U.S. Hwy. 281 just before 9 p.m.

Karr, however, wasn’t riding alone.

She was traveling with her fiancé, Camron Burris, 20, who was driving the 2005 GMC pickup when he lost control after hitting a patch of ice and veered into oncoming traffic, according to Dub Gillum, a spokesman for DPS.

In light of that night, Deegan Burris, the couple’s son who had just turned 9 months old, was strapped into a car seat in the backseat and was not injured.

After hearing of the situation, members of Karr’s family came immediately to the scene, but there were three Tarleton State University students who arrived before anyone else.

Jose Fiscal, Scott Newbury and Keauno Perez, three members of the Kappa Delta Rho fraternity, pulled up to the accident and immediately began to assist the occupants of the vehicles involved.

The three gentlemen attended Karr’s funeral on Saturday, Feb. 15, but seeing Deegan’s face, they said, the students felt moved to do more than what they already had.

When the men heard that the Cowboy Church of Erath County was collecting money for a trust fund for Deegan in honor of his mother, they decided to find a way to contribute.

“The mood at the funeral home was really gloomy and when I saw the child he was so happy and innocent. He was just being a baby,” Fiscal said. “Even though we saw how the accident happened, he’s healthy and I know that he has a brighter future ahead.”

Kappa Delta Rho’s annual Rent-A-Gent philanthropy event is normally held in the spring, and all the proceeds usually go to the foster home in Stephenville.

However, this year the chapter has decided that they should donate the proceeds to Deegan and his family.

“The foster home really benefits more from our time than our money. We really want [to] give back to this family and their lost loved one, [and] this is one little way we can do so,” Newbury said. “There was nothing for us to do for Amber but this is a way we can help her family. I feel like she’s going to live through her baby and this is a way for us to help her.”

Update: KDR’s Rent-a-Gent raised $2,002, and $1,000 will be donated to Deegan.

Correction: Due to misinformation from a source, we have been informed of mistakes in this story. The couples’ son’s name is Deegan, and Karr passed away on Feb. 10, not Feb. 11. We offer our deepest condolences to the family, and for any confusion this mistake may have caused.
