All students scheduled to graduate during three separate Tarleton State University commencement ceremonies we able to walk across the stage today despite a bomb threat discovered inside a Wisdom Gym restroom.

A written threat was found on a women’s restroom stall door between the 10:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. ceremonies. Tarleton’s Code Purple alert system was activated at 12:23 p.m. and the facility was immediately evacuated.

The alert called for the evacuation of Wisdom Gym due to a “potential threat.”

Those who had already gathered for the 1 p.m. ceremony were moved a safe distance from the gym and were later told to assemble at Memorial Stadium. The move in venue caused only a 30-minute delay.

Police then began the process of searching the entire building for the alleged bomb.

“We began a systematic search of the building,” Tarleton Police Chief Justin Williams said in a statement released by Tarleton. “We checked every door, every closet, every drawer in the building.”

A second Code Purple message was sent out at 2:49 p.m. with an “all clear” and it was announced that the third graduation ceremony would be held inside Wisdom Gym.

Additional details about the incident have not yet been released by Tarleton. Stay with myjtac.com in the coming days for more information.
