Six student teachers at Tarleton were honored for their outstanding qualities in the classroom by the College of Education’s Department of Curriculum and Instruction during the annual Reflections ceremony, held May 4.

The ceremony, designed to honor Tarleton’s student teachers, highlights their most memorable moments throughout the school year and recognizes four recipients of the Robert H. Elliott Memorial Award. Presented to students who exemplify Elliott’s beliefs and dedication, the award is given each long semester during the annual ceremony, a program designed to critique and evaluate the recently concluded student teaching session.

This year’s all-level certification award winner, Jenna Harris of Eastland, served as a 4th grade physical education student teacher at Gorman ISD’s Maxfield Elementary School, under the guidance of Lisa Laminack. Harris has received a physical education certification at Tarleton.

Shanna Scarborough a student teacher from Huckabay, was selected as the recipient of this year’s 6^th through 12th grade certification level award winner. She recently completed her student teaching at Hico High School where she taught 9^th and 10th grade Business Information Management under the supervision of Sherry Gerber. Scarborough has received a 6^th-12^th grade business education certification.

This year, four student teachers from their respective cohorts were recognized as Elliott Award Winners for the Early Childhood through 6th grade (EC-6) certification level, including Holly Bolling (Fort Worth cohort), Kaitlyn Cervenka (Stephenville cohort), Kalynn Cox (Waco cohort) and Toni Jenkins (Weatherford cohort).

Bolling, a student teacher from Fort Worth, recently completed her student teaching at White Settlement ISD’s Tannahill Intermediate School where she taught 5th grade mathematics under the supervision of Betsey Mele. Bolling has received an EC-6 generalist certification, and pursued an English as a Second Language (ESL) certification as well.

Cervenka, a native of Waco, completed her student teaching at Granbury ISD’s Mambrino School where she taught Kindergarten under the guidance of Suzan Turner. Cervenka has received an EC-6 generalist certification along with an ESL supplemental certification.

Cox, a student teacher from Waco, recently completed her student teaching at Waco ISD’s Cedar Ridge Elementary School where she taught 1st grade science under the supervision of Kathy Cowan and Amber Pearson. Cox has received an EC-6 elementary education certification, and also pursued an ESL certification.

Jenkins, a native of Paradise, completed her student teaching at Boyd ISD’s intermediate school where she taught 4^th grade language arts and social studies under the guidance of Jackie Smith. Jenkins has received an EC-6 interdisciplinary studies certification.

The Robert H. Elliott Memorial Award was developed by his friends and colleagues in memory of Elliott’s enthusiasm for education and his devotion to students. The veteran educator and administrator served public schools for many years in Colorado before joining the faculty at Tarleton in 1981. He was a professor in the Department of Education and Psychology and supervisor of the student teacher program at the time of his death in 1990.
