Burleson High School senior Dylan Warren, who will enroll at Tarleton State University in the fall, has been named a recipient of a 2012 Texas Armed Services Scholarship.

The scholarship provides up to $10,000 per academic year for up to four years.

“It’s pretty amazing,” said Warren, who plans to major in political science. “I’ve just been working hard to get my grades up and doing sports and extracurriculars. It’s just amazing that it all came together.”

The program was created by the Texas Legislature to encourage students to participate in Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) programs at nonmilitary colleges. Each member of the Legislature may nominate one individual to receive the scholarship.

Warren was nominated by state Rep. Rob Orr of Burleson.

“He will represent Burleson and Johnson County well in all his future activities,” Orr said in making the announcement. “I commend him on his desire to serve our country through service in our armed forces.”

In addition to rigid scholastic requirements, applicants must also agree to complete four years of ROTC while in college and make a four-year commitment to be a member of the Texas Army National Guard, Texas Air National Guard, Texas State Guard, U.S. Coast Guard, U.S. Merchant Marine or serve as a commissioned officer in any branch of the armed services of the United States.

“We are extremely pleased to have Dylan Warren as Tarleton’s first Texas Armed Services Scholarship winner,” said Lt. Col. Daniel Thiebaud, executive officer of Tarleton’s ROTC. “It is a great program and we appreciate state Representative Orr’s due diligence in implementing the program.”

In his application for the scholarship, Warren wrote, “I have a great desire to serve my country, and receiving this scholarship will enhance my ability to attend college and participate in the U.S. Army ROTC Program. My parents have instilled in me the value of servant leadership and I would like to follow the example that they have set as public servants.”

Vice-president of his senior class, Warren has also served as chairman of the Homecoming Elections Committee and as a member of the Canned Food Drive and Homecoming Carnival Committees. He is also a member of the Burleson High School varsity golf team.

His extracurricular activities include the Burleson Police Explorers Post 4911, the Criminal Justice Club and Teen Court.

Warren is the son of Louise and West Warren of Burleson.
