Registration for the Tarleton State University Police Department’s R.A.D. (Rape, Aggression, Defense) spring classes are now available. The free course is open to all female Tarleton students, staff, faculty, and the general public. Classes will be held on February 23- 24 and 29, as well as March 2, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Participants will meet in the foyer of the in Wisdom Gym on February 23.

R.A.D. classes are taught in both the fall and spring semesters by instructors Detective Kristie Bint and Sgt. Amanda Miller with the help of Sgt. Clell Murray, who assists participants in gaining hands on experience through aggressor simulation training.

When asked about the program, both officers’ faces light up, demonstrating their passion for helping to educate women on this topic. Sergeant Miller states, “We love to see the self confidence in the women change from the beginning to the end of the program, once they are educated through this training. [R.A.D.] is fun! We interact with the pads and talk while we’re doing that. It keeps people more engaged. We combine lectures and interactive simulations to educate women on defense techniques.”

The R.A.D. program, founded in 1989, is a nationally recognized alliance of self-defense educators focused on developing defense options for women and children.  R.A.D. has trained more than 900,000 women worldwide since the program was founded.

When asked what women can hope to take away from these courses, Detective Bint replies, “We have the new pads and deals to teach you to be physical, but we also talk about being mind-strong and discuss consent. We’re here to help. The most important thing women can take away from this is education. We want you to have a good time, to learn, and to use this as a resource.”

Classes are limited in size and spaces fill up quickly. Contact Detective Kristie Bint at 254-968-9565 or by email at [email protected] to register or for additional questions.
