The TSU rodeo teams both placed in Big Spring

The Tarleton State University men and women’s rodeo teams competed in the Western Texas College rodeo on April 3-5. Both teams walked away reserve champions. The men’s team finished with 540.00 points and the women’s team totaled 240.00 points.

Both teams had a member place in the all-around. Jace Melvin was fourth with 80.00 points and McKenna Wagner was third with 55.00 points.

In saddle bronc, Travis Nelson and Colton Miller placed second and third, respectively. Nelson totaled 137.0 points and Miller was one behind with 136.0.

In the bareback, Brandon Confalone was the Texan leader with a third place finish and 143.0 points. Richmond Champion and Shon Gibson finished with 79.0 and 137.0 points. Champion was not able to complete the ride in the short, but placed sixth in the event, while Gibson placed seventh.

Billy Bob Brown was the sole Texan to place in the tie down roping. Brown finished seventh with a total time of 29.2 seconds.

Steer wrestling saw success from one Texan. Melvin placed fifth with a total time of 10.7 seconds. Melvin also finished seventh as a header in team roping with a Weatherford College heeler and a long round time of 6.9 seconds.

Also successful in team roping was Shay Carroll. Carroll and his Weatherford College header took first with a total time of 12.9 seconds.

Six Tarleton women placed in the barrel racing on Saturday. Michele Allison totaled a time of 27.81 seconds and Shaylee Williams totaled 28.04 seconds. The two were the top TexAnns with second and third place. Kaci Smith (28.48) and Jaime Barrow (33.12) tied for fourth in the event, and Melena Sweeney (28.86) and Wagner (28.86) took seventh and eighth, respectively.

In breakaway roping Cassidy Boggs tied for fourth with a total time of 4.9 seconds.

Baili Collins and Wagner were able to take fourth and sixth in goat tying. Collins’s time of 15.7 seconds earned her fourth, and Wagner’s total time of 16.2 seconds earned her sixth.

The teams’ next rodeo will be at Howard County Junior College in Big Spring on April 10-12.
