Tarleton’s basketball net was cut down after the Texans won the LSC title.

The Tarleton State University Texan basketball team currently has the No. 2 seed in the nation. The team proved to be worthy of the rank on Tuesday, Feb. 25 when they won their last home game of the regular season.

Four Tarleton players were able to score in double figures during the 87-60 victory over Lubbock Christian University. The Texans forced 19 turnovers and recovered them for 23 points. The offense achieved a combined season-high 26 assists during the game.

De’Andre Upchurch led the team with 19 points, Davene Carter followed next with 12, and Michael Hardge had a career-high 11 points. Tashawn Mabry added 11 from the bench.

Tarleton finished the regular season with 16-1 at Wisdom Gym and increased the winning side of the overall record to 24-1.

LCU started out the game strong with a 5-0 run, but Tarleton wasn’t ready to let them have a big lead and answered with a 9-2 run and a two-point lead. The two teams had a tied ball game up until 11 points, but two three-pointers from Upchurch put the Texans in the lead for the remainder of the game.

Before heading into the locker room at the half, LCU had managed to get within five (39-34) points of the Texans, but Tarleton opened the second half with an 11-2 run that LCU would never recover from.

LCU was only able to get back within eight points of Tarleton with 13:28 left in the game, but Tarleton’s bench was able to keep the team’s lead.

Upchurch led the team in rebounding for the second game in a row with five. Coleman Furst and Damion Clemons each had four boards.

Davin Riebock and Sawyer Kipp each had late three-pointers to give the Texans a total of 10 for the night.

The Texans will finish out the 2013-14 regular season Saturday, March 1 in Commerce against Texas A&M-Commerce at their Fieldhouse. The game is set to begin at 7:30 p.m.
