TexAnns hand West Texas A&M first loss of season

On senior night, senior Kiara Wright passed to a wide-open Lowrance under the basket for the game winning points with 17 seconds left on the clock.

West Texas started off the game with a five point lead before the TexAnns were able to score off of two free throws by Kathy Thomas. The TexAnns then started an 8-2 run to take their first lead of the game, 8-7.

The one point lead stayed with the TexAnns for the next seven minutes, but was followed by a Meagan O’Dell 3-pointer starting a 15-4 Tarleton push. The TexAnns then had their largest lead of the game at 31-19 with 4:06 left in the first half.

West Texas got a few points, but Tarleton kept the lead going into halftime at 32-24

In the start of the second half, West Texas made a push and tied the game at 35-35 just 2:45 into the first half. This started a back-and-forth battle between the two teams for the rest of the game.

The Lady Buffs took a five-point lead, but the TexAnns were able to fight back and matched it with 7:27 left.

With 3:43 left on the clock the TexAnns had a seven-point lead before West Texas had a 10-2 push to take a one-point lead with just 39 seconds left in the game. The Lowrance layup in the last 17 seconds pushed the TexAnns ahead to win the game 71-69.

Leading the team was Wright with 26 points and 15 rebounds. Bledsoe had 10 points, while Thomas and O’Dell each had nine. Raven McGrath added seven off the bench, and Lowrance (5), Karli Moore (2), Ikpeaku Iwobi (2), and Travanti Downes (1) rounded out the scoring for the TexAnns.

Tarleton won the points in the paint battle 42-26, despite being outrebounded 33-34, and also won the battle off the bench 12-6.

The TexAnns had not defeated West Texas since Jan. 7, 2012, and also handed the Lady Buffs their first loss of the year.

The TexAnns will be traveling to Eastern New Mexico Saturday Feb. 22, for the first of their final two games.
