Barker ends the regular season with a broken record

In the TexAnn volleyball game against Angelo State University Saturday, Nov. 16, Senior Danielle Barker became Tarleton’s all-time assist leader with 3,267 assists and counting.

Barker passed her former teammate, Jessie Hartman, on the second point in the third set, adding to the 46 assists during the match.

“It wasn’t an easy record to break. Jessie was a great setter here and played all four years and always did really, really well,” said Barker. “I never would have thought I would have broken this record if you asked me a year ago or even two years ago, and it was definitely not an easy thing to do.”

Barker’s family was there to record every assist until the record, and didn’t stop recording after, taping an A onto the wall with every assist, then holding up a sign announcing the new record for all the fans attending to see. It was a special moment for Barker as well as the TexAnn team and fans.

Barker has played for the TexAnns for four years, and has been a huge part of the team. She has won Lone Star Conference Co-Setter of the Week three times, two of them this year. She has recorded 1,166 assists in her final season at Tarleton, and in 2012, became the fifth player in school history to record over 1,000 assists in a single season with a total of 1,099 assists. She was also named Honorable Mention All-Conference her junior year.

Barker and the TexAnns are competing in the LSC Tournament this weekend in Canyon, with their first match up against Texas A&M-Commerce on Thursday, Nov. 21 at 5 p.m.
