TexAnns finish season in LSC tournament

The Tarleton State University TexAnn volleyball team ended their season Thursday, Nov. 14 in a four-set loss to Texas A&M-Commerce in the Lone Star Conference Championship Tournament Quarterfinals.

In the first set of the match, the game was back and forth for the first 34 points, tied 10 times and making the score 17-17. The Lions then took a two-point lead before the TexAnns came back and tied it again at 21-21.

The Lions then had a kill shot to take away the tie, and continued on a 4-1 run to take the first set 25-22.

Commerce then went into the second match and took a 9-5 lead.  After a timeout, Macie Walker had a kill shot that started a 12-8 TexAnn run tying the set at 17-17.

Both teams continued evenly through the next eight points keeping a tie at 21-21. Katie Covell then delivered a kill and Kaitlyn White had a service ace to give Tarleton a 23-21 lead.

Commerce battled right back to even the game at 23, and the teams went back and forth to 25-25. Jasmine Green then responded with a kill and the Lions had an error giving the TexAnns a second set win.

Tied up with one win a-piece going into the third set, the Lions took an initial six-point lead at 16-10.

Covell responded with a kill shot, sending the TexAnns into a 10-4 run tying the game at 20-all.

Covell and Danielle Barker helped the TexAnns to force extra points with a 24-24 tie. In the extra points, Commerce had the advantage four times, compared to Tarleton only having it once. The Lions were able to take the lead and win the third set in a hard fought 30-28 win.

In the fourth set, the TexAnns were able to rally back from being down 6-10 with a 9-2 run to take a 15-12 lead over the Lions.

Commerce came back with three straight points, then added two more to take back the lead at 17-16. They eventually took the match 25-20 after an 8-4 run.

Jasmine Green had a team leading 19 kills, while Covell added 13. Stacie Murrah left the match in the third set with five kills.

Barker led the TexAnns with 32 assists, while Walker came off the bench to add 15. Emily Klein broke double-digits with 23 kills, making her the only TexAnn ever to have 600 digs in a season with 604 total.

For the four seniors, Green, Murrah, Barker and Klein, three of them ended their careers with their names in the record books.

Murrah, ended her 129 match, four year career with 1,117 kills. Making her sixth on the TexAnn’s all-time kills list, and she is also one of seven TexAnns to have 1,000 kills in her career.

Klein is second on the Tarleton all-time digs list with 1,656 total in her career, and also holds the top two single-season dig records with 599 last season and 604 this year.

Barker is on the top of the all-time assists list with 3,324 in her career.

For Head Coach Mary Schindler, this is just the second time in her nine years at Tarleton that the TexAnns have lost in the first round of the tournament.

The TexAnns finished the 2013 volleyball season with an overall record of 15-14, and a LSC conference record of 8-8. This was their fourth straight LSC Championship Tournament appearance.
