TexAnns rally in last three sets to take match against Commerce

The TexAnns were not ready to go home in three sets Saturday afternoon. The Tarleton ladies came back and won the last three sets to win the match against Texas A&M Commerce.

“It’s exciting to be able to play with a team that’s as good as A&M Commerce, and be able to come back. I know that last night we had a really deflating five set loss, so it was really important for us, just for moral, and to know that we can do it. To be able to press through and comeback and win especially the last three sets, so it’s exciting,” said Coach Mary Schindler.

The first two sets did not play out in Tarleton’s favor. The TexAnns fell behind 3-10 early in the first set. They were able to come back and force extra points, but the Lions took the set 28-26.

In the second set the TexAnns kept up with A&M Commerce and the set was tied up at 17.  The Lions were able to make an 8-5 run late in the set and go up 2-0 in the match.

The third set was all TexAnn early on. A kill by Stacie Murrah, and back-to-back blocks by Murrah and then Kelsey Raglin and Kaitlyn White gave Tarleton a 5-0 lead over the Lions. A&M Commerce tried to come back, cutting the deficit to 9-7. The TexAnns then had a 9-3 run, started by a Katie Covell kill, to take a big 18-10 lead. Tarleton took the third set 25-17, and forced another one.

The TexAnns wanted a fifth set, and Covell helped with a kill after being behind 20-17 to make the set 18-20. Covell followed up the kill with five straight serves to give Tarleton back the lead 23-20. Emily Klein ended the set with a service ace.

The TexAnns had good energy going into the final set, and took an early 9-7 lead. Tarleton took six of the final seven points, and took the final set as well as the match.

Covell had a career high of 19 kills, as well as 14 digs to complete her seventh double-double of the season. Jasmine Green and Murrah each had 13 kills.

Danielle Barker had an impressive 54 assists, while Emily Klein added 30 digs.

The TexAnns head to Austin Tuesday to play St. Edwards at 7 p.m.

Tarleton is now 11-8 overall, and 5-3 in conference.
