TexAnns take it all after thrilling first set win

Tarleton State University took care of business in four sets Tuesday evening, Oct. 21, against non-conference team St. Edwards University in Austin.

In the first set of the match, St. Edwards got off to a good start and went ahead of the TexAnns 10-6. Tarleton fought back though, and a kill by Jazmine Green tied the set up at 13.

After the kill, the TexAnns went on a 7-0 run and made the score 19-13.

The TexAnns extended their lead to 22-16, but the Hilltoppers came back with an 8-2 run to take the lead 24-23. Green had another kill to tie it up and force the set into extra points.

Both teams were back and forth until 30-30, but back-to-back kills by Stacie Murrah and one by Katie Covell gave the TexAnns the win.

The start of the second set was just as back and forth as the first with a tie of 7-7. St. Edward’s pushed for a 18-10 run after the tie and were able to take the set, and tie up the match 1-1.

The TexAnns got an early six-point lead to start off the third set, and extended the lead to 13-7. The Hilltoppers rallied back to tie the set at 16, and the teams were neck-and-neck until they were tied 19-19. After a St. Edward’s error, the TexAnns had a 6-2 run, finished by a set-winning kill by Murrah.

For most of the fourth set, the TexAnns kept a small lead. The Hilltoppers came in at the end, however, to take a 24-23 lead. Tarleton battled back to even the score, and then two straight kills by Covell won the set, as well as the match for the TexAnns.

Emily Klein had a significant game with a team leading 27 digs.

This moved Klein past Sharon Lister into second place on Tarleton’s all-time digs list with 1,474.

Danielle Barker led the team with 47 assits, and Murrah had a team leading 18 kills. Green and Covell also had double figures with 17 and 15 kills, respectively.

The TexAnns will be traveling to Midwestern State on Friday, Oct. 25, and to Cameron on Saturday, Oct. 26.

Tarleton is now 12-8 overall and 5-3 in the conference.
