TexAnns play to a packed gym for home opener; Start the home season with a win

With the odds against them from losing the first set against Texas Wesleyan University, the Tarleton State University TexAnns pushed forward to win the match three sets to one.

The TexAnns first home game of the 2013 season packed Wisdom Gym with fans. The TexAnns may have seemed nervous at first in front of their home crowd, quickly going down in the match by one set. In the first set, TWU jumped out to a 12-5 lead. The TexAnns would rally to make it 23-22, but they would soon fall as they lost the first set.

After the game, head coach Mary Schindler said she told the girls after the first set, “just to play. People in the stands are here for us; they’re not here for the other team.” She also motivated the team by saying, “enjoy it.”

Cassandra Cutbirth said it was the first home game, so they blamed the first set on nerves and, “just tried to get back out there and be tougher.”

Schindler’s words would be all the motivation Tarleton needed as they worked on a 3-0 come-from-behind win.

In the second set, Tarleton would win 25-23 with help from a big kill from Danielle Barker.

With the matches tied at one apiece, Tarleton would go on to win 25- 18. In the third set, Tarleton recorded the most kills in the game out of both teams with a total of 16.

The final set is where Tarleton took the game and ran, winning by a score of 25-16.

In the match, Stacie Murrah and Meg Umbel both recorded 13 kills. Finally, TWU helped Tarleton’s case with 26 errors.

Cutbirth compared the start of the season this year to the end of the season last year by saying,  “all the skills are still there,” but with new players, “the chemistry is still working out.”

Emily Klein who is a senior, standing in at the libero position, said the first season win at home felt, “really good. It wasn’t the win we wanted, we started off slow, but we came back and it was awesome.”

Klein compared this season from last season by saying, “it’s kind of bittersweet. We did really good last year, broke records, our winning record was broke, so not a lot of pressure, but something to beat.”

Klein concluded by saying the team this year is not setting out to beat new records, they are “out to do the best we can.”
