Texan Football squeezes past ASU for second win

The Texans traveled west this past Saturday to face the Angelo State University Rams, and came home with a 38-34 victory, successfully extending their record to 2-0 with both wins being conference opponents.

Angelo State started out hot by scoring the first points of the game on a 15 yard pass on the game’s opening series, but the Texans weren’t down long. They responded strongly with 21 unanswered points coming in the next quarter and a half, including back to back receiving touchdowns for Clifton Rhodes III, one for 22 and the other, 29 yards out, from two different quarterbacks, Jake Fenske and Aaron Doyle, respectively. The Texans finished their run on another touchdown pass from Aaron Doyle, this time to Jeken Frye from eight yards out. The Rams were able to tighten the gap on a touchdown run making the halftime score 21-14 in favor of the Texans.

To close a slow third quarter, ASU cut the lead to just one after missing an extra point attempt that might have changed the tide of the game. With a fourth quarter score of 21-20, the drama hit. A Blake Barns field goal, and an Aaron Doyle smash from one yard out extended the lead to 31-20, but then came the Rams. With the home field advantage, they mounted a comeback. ASU captured the momentum on a 48 yard pass play that would cut the lead to five, but were unable to convert the two point conversion. Then with less than two minutes to play, ASU got back into the end zone to take their first lead since the opening drive. With the score being 34-31, and only 1:48 left on the clock, it was up to the Texan offense to take the ball 78 yards to regain the edge.

After eight plays and 43 yards later, quarterback Jake Fenske dropped back and decided to let the ball fly, it landed into the hands of  Clifton Rhodes III, who scored from 35 yards out to give the Texans a touchdown lead with only 30 seconds left in the game. The defense was able to hold and Tarleton escaped with a 38-34 victory.

Notable stats for the game include Aaron Doyle leading in both Passing and Rushing with 171 yards and two touchdowns, and 69 yards and one touchdown respectively.

Jake Fenske had his fair share of throws giving him 167 yards passing and two touchdowns.

The receivers were led by Clifton Rhodes III with five catches, three of which were for touchdowns, and 103 yards.

On the other side of the ball were several Texan standouts, led by Marquis Wadley, who had 11 total tackles, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery, and an interception.

Jake Blount was a monster up front recording two sacks, he was complemented by Julius Hurndon and Patrick Bettiol, who each recorded a sack of their own.

The Texans look to another neutral site game at the FC Dallas stadium in Frisco, where they will take on the Abilene Christian University Wildcats, and look to create a winning streak in their first three games of the season. Kickoff will be at 4 p.m.
