Tarleton rodeo teams rope in third place at CNFR

The 65th annual Collegiate National Finals Rodeo (CNFR) finished Saturday the 15th in Casper, Wyo. with Tarleton State University’s men’s and women’s teams placing third.

“It was extremely close for team championships and both were only 85 points out of first. Both teams won third overall. All seven on the men’s team placed in a round or in the average. Three out of the four women placed in the average” stated Coach Mark Eakin.

Billy Bob Brown won the third round in the tie down roping with a 7.7 and placed in every round of the team roping. Brown won the short go round with a 5.8, a national title in the team roping and earned the men’s All-Around Cowboy award.

Clayton Shaw placed in the first round in the tie down roping with an 8.9 and won a reserve national championship. Shaw also had the men’s “Horse of the Year”.

Jake Self did not draw good enough to get him in the top eight in the bareback riding, however, he did make the short go and was ninth overall.

Richmond Champion won second place with a 79 score in the third round in the bareback riding. Reese Riemer won the first round of the tie down roping with an 8.2. His calf turned back in the short go round costing him a chance at the national title.

Chase Williams tied the arena record in the second round of the tie down roping with a 7.5 and Tim Sparing won two out of three in the second round of the steer wrestling with a 4.2.

“Between the two teams we won six go rounds which were amazing,” stated Eakin.

Cadee Tew won third in the nation in the team roping. Tew also won the second round of the breakaway roping with a 2.1.

Katey Anthony won fourth in the average in the breakaway roping and won the short go round with 2.0 seconds, the fastest time of the CNFR.

Kynder Starr placed in three of the four rounds and won fourth in the average in the barrel racing. Cassidy Boggs missed her third calf costing her a chance at making the short go.

“I am very proud of everyone who represented Tarleton at this year’s CNFR,” stated Eakin.
