Women’s tennis to start in spring

Spring is just around the corner and so is tennis season. Coach Lance Drake and the entire team seem to have a positive attitude about this upcoming season.

“The South Central region is the strongest it has ever been from top to bottom.  Every match will be a difficult challenge.  The girls put in a lot of hard work this past fall, which will hopefully pay dividends for us in our matches this season.  We have one of the deepest teams talent wise we have had since 2006,” said Coach Drake when asked about his hopes for this season.

This will be the 10th season in a row that the Tarleton State University women’s tennis team enters the 2013 spring semester ranked in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s NCAA Division II rankings top 50. Their 28th place ranking is something the coach and the players are excited about.

Senior Karla Martinez said, “I’m excited for this season to start. We are looking forward to having a good season and good results. Last season we had some bad experiences but that helped us to grow as a team. We are ready to give our best in every match we play!”

Not only are these girls looking for success on the court, but they’re also having success in the classroom. This past semester the team had an overall GPA of 3.78. Coach Drake claimed that fall’s team GPA is the highest it has ever been since he has been at Tarleton.

The team will begin their season on Feb. 1 against Lamar University at 11:30 a.m.
