Tarleton rodeo continues a tradition of excellence at the national level

Although Tarleton, a small school by comparison, faces Universities like Oklahoma, which boasts over 35,000 students, the Texans and TexAnns of rodeo well represent the University year after year as they continue to send athletes to compete at the national level.

Tarleton State University rodeo made their way to Casper Wyoming for the 63rd annual College National Finals Rodeo (CNFR) and made a significant mark on numerous events.

Tim Sparing represented Tarleton in steer wrestling and placed 19th overall out of 39 participants. In his three tries, his times were 4.0, 6.2 and 14.2 respectively. Sparing finished with a total score of 70 points.

Jacob Self made Tarleton’s name known in his event; bareback riding. During his three tries, he scored a 76.5, 74.5 and 73.5. Out of the 37 competitors Self finished second overall with 185 points.

Tarleton had two successful participants in goat tying. Out of 51 people Cassie Vierstra finished fifth and Tara Schroedter finished 11th. Vierstra finished with times of 6.6, 7.2 and 7.3 seconds in her three tries giving her 135 total points. Schroedter finished her tries with times of 6.9, 7.5 and 7.5 respectively.

In the event of breakaway roping Katie Vierstra placed third overall out of 55 with times of 4.9, 2.9 and 3.3.

Two Tarleton students competed in tie down roping: Kiel Rowan and Troy Hubbard. Rowan completed with times of 19.8, 14.0 and 10.8, finishing 22nd out of 45. Hubbard was only scored on his first and third try with times of 18.6 and 14.5 respectively, putting him in 38th place.

In team roping Payton Norell teamed up with Tanner Allen from Franks Phillips College and finished 16th out of 43. They were only scored for their first two tries with times of 12.3 and 13.7.

In Barrel Racing Casey Carter finished 45th out of 47 with times of 23.49, 15.00 and 20.07.

Tate Owens competed for Tarleton in saddle bronco riding. He was only scored on his third try with a 66.0. Owens finished 29th out of 34.
