No. 14 Texans start season 7-0 for first time in school history

The Texans improved to 7-0 on Wednesday for the first time in the school history with a 90-35 victory over the Oklahoma Panhandle State Aggies at Wisdom Gym.

Tarleton is ranked No. 14 in the nation overall and currently the No. 1 in the nation in scoring defense (56.0 OPP PPG), scoring margin (41.7 SCR MAR), and No.7 in scoring offense (97.7 PPG).

Mohammed Lee (Jr.) posted a career-high 23 points off the bench while Chuck Guy led the starters with 17 points including 3-4 behind the arc. Lee scored 23 of Tarleton’s 57 points off the bench and the Texans combined to shoot 40.6 percent from the three point line posting up 13 three-pointers. Tarleton never trailed in the game holding the Aggies to just 24.1 percent shooting.

The Texans opened the game with an 8-0 run going up 12-7 with 14:52 left to play in the first half, then Tarleton outscored the Aggies 26-2 over the course of the next nine minutes to extend its lead to 38-9 at the 5:50 mark. Tarleton then finished out the first half with a 7-2 run to take a 31-point lead into the break, up 45-14.

The Aggies would only get within 30 points of the Texans on two separate occasions in the second half; OPSU’s final field goal came with 2:49 left to play, making it an 83-35 game, but Tarleton closed out the contest with six straight points en route to the 90-35 win.

Tarleton finished the game with 50 rebounds as Davene Carter pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds. The Texans have now posted 50 rebounds or more in three of its seven games so far this season.

Tarleton recorded 10 steals and scored 27 points off OPSU’s 15 total turnovers. The Texans turned the ball over only seven times and did not allow the Aggies to score on any of those possessions. Guy posted a game-high seven of Tarleton’s 21 assists and Carter tallied three of the team’s six blocked shots.

 Tarleton will have 13 days off until its next game when the team closes out its eight-game home stretch against McMurry on Tuesday, Dec. 17. Tip-off is set for 8 p.m. at Wisdom Gym.
