TexAnns fight for win over Texas Woman’s

Adding another win to the list, the TexAnns (12-4, 8-2 LSC) squeaked by Texas Woman’s University (6-11,4-7 LSC) in the last 14 seconds of the game with a final score of 71-69.

Junior Kiara Wright tied the Tarleton NCAA rebounding record and scored a career-high of 34 points making 11 of 15 shots from the floor and 12 of 16 from the free throw line adding to her already impressive 11 rebounds and five steals.

Wright’s 11 rebounds tied her with JoAnne Jones for the eighth spot on the all-time Tarleton rebound list and put her name on the school record for career rebounds in Tarleton’s 18-year NCAA history.

The TexAnns battled hard to keep the lead during the first half and were ahead 40-37 going into the second half.

TWU took a five-point lead with 12:11 left in the game. Fighting hard for that win, Wright added two free throws and a layup making the score 52-53 with 9:26 remaining.

The lead went back and forth until the final tie of the game, 69-69, happened with 1:12 on the clock. A time out was called by Tarleton to come up with a plan of action. Adding a final two points to her already outstanding record, Wright got the open layup and brought the score to 71-69 with just 14 seconds left in the game, sending the entire crowd to their feet.

TWU failed to make their jump shot in the final seconds of the game, giving the TexAnn’s their eighth conference win.

Following Wright’s outstanding 34 points were Peyton Adamson with 15 and Keyra Johnson with nine off the bench. Morgan Ashmore had a career-high of her own Wednesday with seven assists.

Both teams shot 51 percent from the floor, but the TexAnns were 70 percent from the free-throw line, while TWU had 67 percent.

The TexAnns will travel to Texas A&M Commerce this Saturday for a game at 2 p.m.
