Men’s Basketball recap vs. Eastern New Mexico

 

The Texans suffered a painful loss Wednesday to Eastern New Mexico University at Greyhound arena. The Greyhound victory against the Texans was the first since 2007.

Tarleton falls to 8-6 overall and 2-4 in the Lone Star Conference while ENMU is now 6-9 on the year and 3-4 in conference play.

In the first half, the game was tied until ENMU stole the ball and scored a layup to make the score 14-12 with 11:04 on the board. Tarleton’s defense reigned in the Greyhounds keeping them from scoring any more ground baskets until 4:43 when the greyhounds scored back to back three-pointers making the score 22-21. Tarleton finished the half with a 4-0 run taking a lead of 26-21.

At 15:03, Tarleton led by 15 until ENMU scored two more three pointers bringing the score to 38-29. The Greyhounds went on a 22-7 run to catch up with the Texans bringing the score to 48-45.

After sophomore forward Davene Carter scored bringing the score to 50-45 ENMU went on a 6-1 run that tied the game 51-51. A dunk from Carter put the Texans ahead by two. The greyhounds recovered and scored a three and a layup to take the lead. With 28 seconds left, junior guard Coleman Furst made three free throws at the line to tie the game for the Texans.

ENMU quickly called a time out to hatch out a plan for the final play. With .02 seconds on the board and the buzzer closing in, the greyhounds sunk a three pointer defeating the Texans 59-56.

Tarleton dominated total field goal and free throw percentages with 43.6 and 72.7 against ENMU’s 43.1 percent and 21.4 percent. However, the Greyhound’s three-point field goal percentage was 46.2 unlike the Texans, 35.3 percent.

Furst racked up 16 points with Carter following with 14 points.  

The Texans will host West Texas A&M at Wisdom Gym this Saturday at 7 p.m.
