Tarleton State University’s Symphonic Band will present a spring concert at 7:30 p.m., Monday, April 16, featuring guest conductor and Tarleton alumnus Cody Knott and guest trombonist Dr. Jonathan D. Alvis from the University of South Dakota.

In addition to accompanying Alvis, the Symphonic Band will perform Amazing Grace and Joy by composer Frank Ticheli, who recently served as guest composer for the 2nd annual Tarleton Invitational Band Festival. The band will also perform O’ Magnum Mysterium by Morten Lauridsen, originally a choral work that was transcribed for band by H. Robert Reynolds.

Under the direction of Dr. Gary Westbrook, director of athletic bands, the Symphonic Band will take the stage along with the Tarleton Horn Choir and Clarinet Choir in the auditorium of the Clyde H. Wells Fine Arts Center.

Knott, a 2010 magna cum laude Tarleton graduate and native of Cedar Hill, Texas, currently serves as the graduate teaching assistant for the University of South Dakota’s athletic bands and studio low brass ensemble, as well as the associate conductor of the university’s Red Low Brass Ensemble.

At South Dakota, Knott has performed in the symphonic band, brass choir, jazz band, symphony orchestra, and other chamber ensembles. He has also guest conducted both the South Dakota concert and symphonic bands. Knott will graduate in July 2012 with a master’s of music in trombone performance.

While at Tarleton, Knott participated in every musical ensemble and guest conducted both the symphonic band and wind ensemble.

Admission to the concert is $5 for adults or free with a Tarleton ID. General admission tickets go on sale one hour prior to the performance
